History of the church of the nazarene

Our Identity:

Following the way of Jesus together toward shared belonging and transformational faith.

Our Faith Commitments:

At Shawnee Church of the Nazarene we hold to the faith of the Apostles' Creed (below) and strive to live it out in relevant and fresh ways for the sake of our faith community.

We are called to be an intentional community. In doing life together, we discover our purpose as a people who GATHER, GIVE, and GROW. As we gather for worship and fellowship, we learn to love each other as Christ has loved us. Discovering our identity in Christ calls us into rhythms of compassion, generosity, and service. All the while, we engage in discipleship through prayer and the ministry of the Word that our faith would continue to grow.

The Apostles' Creed

We believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

WE ARE A CHRISTIAN PEOPLE

As members of the Church Universal, we join with all true believers in proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ and in embracing the historic Trinitarian creedal statements of Christian faith. We value our Wesleyan-Holiness heritage and believe it to be a way of understanding the faith that is true to Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience.

WE ARE A HOLINESS PEOPLE

God, who is holy, calls us to a life of holiness. We believe that the Holy Spirit seeks to set us free from a life dominated by sin, renew us in the image of God, empower us to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbors as ourselves, and produce in us the character of Christ. Holiness in the life of believers is most clearly understood as Christlikeness.

WE ARE A MISSIONAL PEOPLE

We are a sent people, responding to the call of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to go into all the world, witnessing to the Lordship of Christ and participating with God in the building of the Church and the extension of His kingdom (Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Corinthians 6:1). Our mission (a) begins in worship, (b) ministers to the world in evangelism and compassion, (c) encourages believers toward Christian maturity through discipleship, and (d) prepares women and men for Christian service through Christian higher education.
