Home Groups
Home Groups are a significant part of our life together at Shawnee Church of the Nazarene. It's one of the critical components of being a fully engaged participant in this congregation.
What is a Home Group?
It's a group of 12-20 people who meet together on a regular basis for the purpose of fellowship, prayer, and spiritual growth.
What ages are involved in Home Groups?
Home Groups are intergenerational, meaning that all ages participate. We believe that the church is an inclusive community. We also believe that as the body of Christ we all have responsibility for each other and can learn from one another. So, in Home Groups adults of all ages, teens, and children meet together and help each other to grow in the faith.
When do Home Groups meet?
Most groups meet on Sunday evenings at least twice a month. There are some that meet at other times, (Saturday evening, Sunday afternoon, etc.)
Where do Home Groups meet?
Usually in the home of one of the group members. Often this is the home of the leader, but some groups pass around the hosting responsibility from week to week.
What happens at the Home Group meeting?
The group usually gathers first around a meal that all the participants help to prepare. Then, after a time of fellowship and food, the leader gathers the group together for about a 45 minute to 1 hour spiritual formation time. This time includes informal sharing about how things are going in our lives, the good things and the challenges. The purpose of this is so we can know each other better and pray for one another. Then the group spends a few moments talking together about how they are applying the sermon from the worship service that day. The Scripture is read and a few simple questions are asked by the leader to help with the discussion. The meeting closes with a time of prayer. The whole thing usually lasts about 2 hours or so.
